CREATIVITY SHED, SENSORY GARDEN FOR WAUCHOPE SENIORS
Federal funding will deliver a major boost for community resilience and connection amongst Wauchope seniors.
Under the Federal Coalition Government’s Black Summer Bushfire Recovery Grants program, $475,200 will allow Omnicare Alliance – a not-for-profit, community services provider - to create a Wauchope Seniors Hub - Creativity Shed based at Bain Park, for all local seniors to take part.
Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie said the project was in direct response to the mental health impacts on elderly people, caused by increased isolation.
“It’s been a lonely and uncertain time for many members of our community, particularly older people and those suffering from dementia,” Dr Gillespie said.
“The bushfires of 2019 and the resulting smoke haze which lingered for months, forced many people to isolate, to avoid exacerbating health conditions. And then COVID lockdowns came on top of that.
“This is a great project to build confidence and connection, answering a strong community need.”
Omnicare Alliance CEO Andrea Caldwell said the funding would be used to deliver practical initiatives – special events, creative projects, physical exercise, skills training and outdoor activities including a sensory garden.
“We all flourish when we feel a sense of belonging. We aim to provide meaningful and purposeful activities, while creating connections with others,” Ms Caldwell said.
“The funding will also allow us to make minor improvements to the site and employ qualified staff to run the Seniors Hub and workshops to train volunteers. Our goal is to create an inclusive place that is available to all members of the community suffering loneliness and isolation,” she said.
